PD Dr Sandro Kohl is a specialist in knee endoprosthetics at the Hirslanden Clinic Trauma Centre in Zurich. His main treatment focuses include diagnosis and therapy of knee injuries and the implantation of patient-specific 3D knee endoprostheses using the rapid recovery procedure.
Furthermore, the analysis and treatment of painful knee prostheses is another focus. In addition, the knee specialist supports the University Hospital of Berne as a Senior Consultant for complex knee injuries.

As a specialist in orthopaedic surgery and traumatology, Dr Kohl specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of injuries and degenerative diseases, primarily of the knee joint. He practises at the Hirslanden Trauma Centre in Zurich and at Orthoplus in Berne. In doing so, Dr Kohl attaches great importance to detailed individual diagnostics in order to select the appropriate treatment method that should lead to the best possible result for the patient.
PD Dr Kohl treats the entire spectrum of knee injuries. In the case of meniscal injuries, where surgery is always performed arthroscopically, he places particular importance to the individual situation of the patient in question. Dr Kohl always prefers preservation of the meniscus with meniscal suturing or sometimes even meniscal transplantation over a removal, if possible. Should it be necessary to combine therapy of the meniscal injury with further treatments, these will be carried out during the same operation, if feasible as well.
For cruciate ligament injuries, dislocation of the knee joint and patellar instability, Dr Kohl has numerous modern surgical methods he can call upon. Here again, detailed diagnostics are the priority for determining the individual treatment concept. Besides techniques preserving the cruciate ligament, Dr Kohl performs minimally invasive cruciate ligament reconstructions using autologous or donor tendons. Even in the case of a repeat cruciate ligament tear after a previously performed surgery, or when there are complex injuries of several ligaments, the knee specialist performs revision procedures.
A special focus of PD Dr Kohl's medical activities is the implantation of hip and knee prostheses. He performs all endoprosthetic operations using minimally invasive techniques and the latest patient-specific 3D implants. Rapid recovery is guaranteed as part of the individually tailored rapid recovery procedure.
The fast-track or rapid recovery procedure is a medical concept in which recovery time is shortened. Thus, the patient's optimal post-surgery behaviour is already practised ahead of the incision. The operation is also performed in a most minimally invasive and tissue-sparing manner as possible. After surgery, Dr Kohl focuses on immediate mobilisation and rehabilitation. The patient quickly senses an improvement compared to the situation ahead of surgery and can thus benefit from the procedure in the shortest time possible.
In addition to implanting artificial knee joints, Dr Kohl is also expert in knee endoprosthesis replacement surgery. During a specially scheduled consultation hour about ‘Painful Knee Prostheses’, he takes time to comprehensively analyse patients’ problems. Consultations can take place as part of a second opinion or as an initial advice in case of problems with artificial knee joints. In either circumstance, treatment is individually tailored to the existing condition and the patient’s personal needs.
Asst. Lect. Dr. Sandro Kohl is an FMH specialist physician in orthopedic surgery and traumatology of the muscular skeletal system. He has been active in the field of orthopedic surgery as an in-patient physician at the Hirslanden Hospital in Zurich since 2017; previously, he headed the Department of Knee Surgery and Sports Traumatology at the Berne University Hospital for several years. Asst. Lect. Dr. Kohl completed his training at various renowned hospitals, including at the Berlin Charité, at the ATOS Hospital in Heidelberg and at the Berne University Hospital, Inselspital.
Here, he has a teaching appointment in orthopedic surgery and traumatology, focusing on knee surgery. His clinical and academic emphases are knee surgery, trauma surgery (traumatology) and sports traumatology. Here, he prefers to perform gentle arthroscopic procedures, in which maintaining the existing structures are in the foreground. The reconstruction, correction and rebuilding of ligaments, joints and cartilage frequently show better prospects of success in the long term.
Asst. Lect. Dr. Kohl’s extensive service portfolio also includes the minimal-invasive implantation of artificial, patient-specific 3-D knee joints using the Rapid Recovery technique. A further focus is revision surgery for highly complex injuries to the knee joint and painful knee prostheses. Thanks to his wide expertise and years of experience, he has mastered all surgical techniques with the greatest certainty. Asst. Lect. Dr. Kohl is also the author of a large number of scientific papers. His enormously extensive list of publications underscores Asst. Lect. Dr. Kohl’s great expertise in the field of knee surgery, sports traumatology and complex revision surgery. He has been honored with multiple awards and prizes for his clinical and scientific work; together with his colleagues, was also awarded the Innovation Prize of the German Orthopedics and Trauma Surgery Association for the development of a new technique for the preservation of the anterior cruciate ligament where there is a cruciate ligament tear.
In addition, Asst. Lect. Dr. Kohl is involved as an expert in multiple national and international specialist associations, including the Arthroscopy and Joint Surgery Association (AGA) and the European Society for Sports Traumatology, Knee Surgery and Arthroscopy (ESSKA). He is a member of the Knee Panel of Experts of the Swiss Orthopedics and Traumatology Association.
