Specialist in Knee Surgery in the Case of Knee Injuries and Artificial Knee Joint Replacement

As a specialist in orthopaedic surgery and traumatology, Dr Kohl specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of injuries and degenerative diseases, primarily of the knee joint. He practises at the Hirslanden Trauma Centre in Zurich and at Orthoplus in Berne. In doing so, Dr Kohl attaches great importance to detailed individual diagnostics in order to select the appropriate treatment method that should lead to the best possible result for the patient.

Diagnose PD Dr. med. Sandro Kohl Kniechirurg

Diagnostics and Therapy for Knee Injuries

PD Dr Kohl treats the entire spectrum of knee injuries. In the case of meniscal injuries, where surgery is always performed arthroscopically, he places particular importance to the individual situation of the patient in question. Dr Kohl always prefers preservation of the meniscus with meniscal suturing or sometimes even meniscal transplantation over a removal, if possible. Should it be necessary to combine therapy of the meniscal injury with further treatments, these will be carried out during the same operation, if feasible as well.

For cruciate ligament injuries, dislocation of the knee joint and patellar instability, Dr Kohl has numerous modern surgical methods he can call upon. Here again, detailed diagnostics are the priority for determining the individual treatment concept. Besides techniques preserving the cruciate ligament, Dr Kohl performs minimally invasive cruciate ligament reconstructions using autologous or donor tendons. Even in the case of a repeat cruciate ligament tear after a previously performed surgery, or when there are complex injuries of several ligaments, the knee specialist performs revision procedures.

Implantation of Patient-Specific 3D Knee Prostheses Using the Rapid Recovery Procedure

A special focus of PD Dr Kohl's medical activities is the implantation of hip and knee prostheses. He performs all endoprosthetic operations using minimally invasive techniques and the latest patient-specific 3D implants. Rapid recovery is guaranteed as part of the individually tailored rapid recovery procedure.

The fast-track or rapid recovery procedure is a medical concept in which recovery time is shortened. Thus, the patient's optimal post-surgery behaviour is already practised ahead of the incision. The operation is also performed in a most minimally invasive and tissue-sparing manner as possible. After surgery, Dr Kohl focuses on immediate mobilisation and rehabilitation. The patient quickly senses an improvement compared to the situation ahead of surgery and can thus benefit from the procedure in the shortest time possible.

Second Opinion and Revision Procedures in Case of Painful Knee Prostheses

In addition to implanting artificial knee joints, Dr Kohl is also expert in knee endoprosthesis replacement surgery. During a specially scheduled consultation hour about ‘Painful Knee Prostheses’, he takes time to comprehensively analyse patients’ problems. Consultations can take place as part of a second opinion or as an initial advice in case of problems with artificial knee joints. In either circumstance, treatment is individually tailored to the existing condition and the patient’s personal needs.
